George R. Kalan

George Kalan is the founder of Orien Advisory Services, where he provides board-level advisory services and general management consulting support to small and mid-sized high-tech ventures. In the mid-1980’s, George co-founded and managed Orien Ventures, an unique venture capital partnership with Mitsui & Co. that pioneered the concept of strategic partnering between small US ventures and large Japanese companies. Before becoming a venture capitalist, he was an international management consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton and the founder of Kalan Sutton McGraw, a consulting organization specializing in growth and diversification strategies for technology-driven Fortune 500 companies.

George began his career as an aerospace engineer with MIT’s Instrumentation Laboratory (currently the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory) where he served as Lead Engineer for the digital autopilot that controlled the Lunar Module during the Apollo Program and was also a member of the Apollo 13 rescue team that received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

George holds a B.S. with High Honors in Electrical Engineering from Case Institute of Technology, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.B.A. from The Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
